Fitzsimmons, Bob Mitchell, Charley vs. Upham, Arthur Slavin, Frank Paddy vs. Vacquelin, Felix Slavin, Frank Paddy vs. Mitchell, Charley III Duffy, Professor John (referee)
Billed as a "Grand International Glove Contest," this prize "Finish Fight" featured Peter Maher, Heavyweight Champion of Ireland, who was knocked out by the Cornishman Fitzsimmons, Middleweight Champion of the World, in the 12th round. In a series of fights on the undercard, Mitchell, world heavyweight contender against Corbett in 1894, fought both Upham and Slavin, and Slavin fought Vacquelin as well. Slavin, "The Sydney Cornstalk" faced Mitchell 4 times in the span of a year in 3-round matches, always resulting in no contest decisions; this was the 3rd such event. Mitchell was able to defeat the Texan middleweight Upham and Slavin found his 3 rounds with Vacquelin just as dissatisfying as the ones with Mitchell, with a no contest ruling in that bout as well. |
