"The Cincinnati Cobra" Ezzard Charles had battled Cleveland's Italian stallion Joey Maxim, professionally named for a machinegun, on 3 previous occasions – twice in '42 & once in early '49 – and had taken all by decision.  In this all-Ohio matchup for the world heavyweight championship staged in Illinois, Charles held the heavyweight belt when he met Maxim, the world light heavyweight titlist, again for 15 rounds and hammered him sufficiently over the course of them to earn another unanimous decision and retain the heavier crown.
On the typical Chicago Stadium undercard, underdogs prevailed, as the undefeated young Wesbury Bascom out of St. Louis provided Detroit-based Johnny Summerlin only his 2nd loss in 14 contests by a TKO in the 3rd of 6, while the Utah heavyweight Jack Nelson lost when the single fight veteran from Ireland Kevin Allen knocked him out in the 1st of their 6 rounder.  The veterans "Chicago" Dale Hall and Carley "Doc" Williams were at it for only 3 before the Missouri-born Williams woke up on his back after a fierce blow from the Californian.  The Michigander McDonald lasted fewer than 3 with the Armenian-American "Waukegan" Serenian, while in a short pairing of local middleweights, the rookie southpaw from the Windy City Dick Guerrero took all of the slated 4 to decision the struggling local novice Jesse Gray.
