Miller, Ray vs. Lynch, California Joe Lamar, Johnny vs. Sacco, Johnny Young George vs. Rollinger, Lou
Future Hall of Fame inductee Mickey Walker won the World Welterweight Championship from Jack Britton at Madison Square Garden in New York in early November of 1923 and defended it repeatedly, yet the "Toy Bulldog" from Elizabeth, New Jersey, was not satisfied with the honors and challenged at the light heavyweight level against Ireland's Mike McTigue in January of 1925. This competition in California with the "Whittier Bearcat" Bert Colima followed on the heels of that amazing triumph as one of the over 160 bouts in the enduring scrapper's career. Colima was disqualified in the 7th after going down for the 2nd time and having his manager try to apply smelling salts while the referee was still counting over him. On the undercard in Vernon's Doyle's Coliseum, lightweight Ray Miller suffered a rare defeat at the hands of California Joe Lynch after the 8 rounds of action. In shorter combats, Johnny Lamar took out Johnny Sacco after 4 rounds, and Young George and Lou Rollinger went the distance without either earning the honors. |
