In a bout billed as "The Sunshine Showdown" on the Caribbean island of Jamaica,  the huge Texan George Foreman, NABF heavyweight belt holder, had his shot at the world crowns held by the indominable Philadelphian Joe Frazier, who was undefeated in 29 straight professional bouts.  "Big" George could stand in with anyone though and deliver a fury of blows to hamper any assault.  The purposeful Foreman hammered the champion "Smokin' Joe" to the canvas repeatedly in both the 1st and the 2nd before the fight was stopped by the referee, the great Arthur Mercante, Sr., resulting in Frazier's first loss in his 8-year professional career.  The powerful pugilists would meet again in Union dale on Long Island, New York, for the NABF title after Foreman was forced by the resurgent Muhammad Ali to surrender the world crown in Zaire in 1974 in the "Rumble in the Jungle."
In the other championship contest on the bill, the 2 combatants 2nd in Kingston for the Commonwealth lightweight title, the Canadian champion from Alberta, Al Ford lost his challenge again to the Jamaican king Percy Hayles when the 15-round match was stopped in the 12th because of the Edmonton-born Ford's injuries.  The Jamiacan's glory did not last all that long, for after finally losing the Empirial crown in July of 1976 to Jonathan Dele of Nigeria in Lagos, Hayles would be killed by a car while bicylcing back on his home island in August of that same year.

On the undercard in the National Stadium in Kingston in 10-round matches, Philly's own future middleweight contender "Willie the Worm" Monroe took less than a round to knock out the Jamaican Roy Lee, while Lee's countryman Bunny Grant defeated the welterweight Mario Saurennann, also down from Philadelphia, when their fight was stopped in the 8th.  The short heavyweight affair on the card lasted 6 frames between Billy Williams, the "Moleman" out of Vineland, New Jersey, and the Tobagan "Tank" Carl Baker before Williams garnered the unanimous decision over his southern Caribbean opponent.
