In this bout, Jose Luis "El Zurdo" Ramirez (Mexico) lost his WBC Lightweight title to Julio Cesar "JC" Chavez (Mexico). Chavez successfully defended his WBA Lightweight title at the same time. The ending of this match was deemed controversial. At the beginning of the eleventh of the twelve scheduled rounds, Chavez and Ramirez butted heads, causing Ramirez to bleed near his forehead. The ring doctor, Flip Holman, examined Ramirez and then stopped the fight. Chavez was deemed the winner by technical decision. Ramirez protested the decision to no avail.
